For some days now there has been horse-trading and high-level politicking over who would become the running mate of the former President Mahama on social media and newspapers.
Selecting a running mate is so crucial that it can either make or mar Mahama’s race to Ghana’s seat of power again in 2020.
When it comes to choosing a great mate, whether in politics or business, the essentials extend well beyond charisma, connections and political leverage. The key foundational elements are trust, loyalty and complementary skills and qualities.
Vice presidential picks should always share values and vision, and should not have a dislike for one another, in order not to produce divisiveness in the administration. it seemed the pairing of great; revealing and must have an extraordinary pairing of skills, influence, leadership, and trust.
With the increased political consciousness among the electorates, Mr Mahama’s choice of a running mate can either mean a return to power for the NDC or victory for the incumbent, Nana Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2020.
Like the choice of a spouse, selecting a running mate is so important that it can either make or mar Mahama’s race to the seat of power in 2020.
A lot of names have come up but this decision is so important that we’re looking for someone with a proven track record of competence, character and integrity to deliver Ghana from the mess the NPP has created in over three years
At the moment, these are the five names on the table.
Dr Samuel Sarpong
Former Mayor of Kumasi, Former Ashanti Regional Minister, a Respected Ashanti man who cuts across. Before Election 2016 he was co-opted as a member of the Central Regional NDC. He commands a lot of respect and has the pedigree to Partner John Dramani Mahama. He’s a mobilizer and a Fund-raiser. And works in tandem with the Grassroots of the Party, a detrabilized Personality who cuts across various ethnic groups and a heavyweight in Ghana politics. You may not count him in but he’s top on the list of possible running mates for Mahama. His relationship with Mahama has improved in recent times.
“Having personally followed him in the past six months, listened and interacted with him on a number of issues negatively affecting our society, I observed in him a person who has the burning desire to leave a footprint in the sands of time.
As a vice president, Sarpong will not be a figurehead. He has the necessary experience for the job,” When it comes Corruption, he’s an anti Corruption crusader who has worked as a Former Regional director of the Former Serious Fraud Office now EOCO. He’s also been a former Central Regional Minister. A friend of the less-privileged, compassionate and zealous in service, a man of uncommon humility, a loyal, dependable and selfless patriot.
Alexander Percival Segbefia.
A learned person who is also in the race. He’s a party man and has been able to prove himself as a humble leader who has exhibited that his humility is known beyond bounds. What the people of Ghana are looking for is a humble selfless, truly confident intelligent, non-corrupt God fearing person who is working and focused. His strong record on ethics and government integrity cannot be questioned in Ghana. He was a Former Crown State Attorney in Westminster London, former NDC ChairmanUK/Ireland, A former Minister of Health. Hon Segbefia was trusted by the late President Mills who made him a deputy Chief of Staff in his administration, then Deputy Defense Minister before Health Minister.
He is from the Volta Region and is respected amongst Ghanaians, his perfect human relations, courtesies, and good communication skills is his trump card. Ghanaians are always happy to hear him speak and listen to him with rapt attention when he speaks. He’s currently the Director of International Relations of the NDC party. He’s quieter, an obviously ambitious politician and a silent political heavyweight. He will bring on board Complementary Skills.
Alex, by appearance and history, is not a noisemaker; he is more a man of the center, and already has the finesse for a vice-presidential relationship, as he has a very warming face with the public. He is anti-indiscipline and a serious person when it comes to working for Ghana.
He is grounded in a mind of independency. He is all about reality rather than a wide-open fantasy. He is a man of character. He is a staunch Christian and a man of tolerance.

When it comes to choosing a great mate, whether in politics or business, the essentials extend well beyond charisma, connections and political leverage. The key foundational elements are trust, loyalty and complementary skills and qualities.

Some say in Politics you need to move higer and not stagnant. As a tried and tested Politican he may have the magic wand to bring the party back as a Running Mate. It’s alleged that all the regional chairmen support him and is considered to “pacify” the grass roots” which was marginalized under the Mahama administration”.
A running mate would emerge after due consultations with NDC leaders ”
Former Energy Minister under President Mahama the only sitting MP in the race.He cuts across and has good human relations. He’s a grassroots man and has an enviable record when it comes to grassroots politics. The Ruling NPP is never comfortable with him because of his pedigree in politics and uprooting the Experienced NPP current Chairman Hon Freddy Blay from his seat in Elembelle. His yes is his yes and constantly winning new people to the Party. He’s a mobilizer in Politics He might not also have a clay feet but has a harmonious working relationship with President Mahama. Eland International Ghana Limited, an Indian owned commodity company, is pursuing some Ghanaian businessmen, including a former Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB), Daniel Gyimah and his son, Stephen Yaw Opoku Gyimah, for sums running into almost US$600million.
Several documents cited by The Herald, mentioned others such as Prosper Adabla, Sam Adabla and Edward Boahene, as partners of the two men, who went into rice trading business, with Eland International Ghana Limited and Eland Thailand Company Limited, but were unable to properly account for the supplies given them and sold here in Ghana.
It is a transaction in which NIB, is said to have acted in some unethical manner, leading to access to the company’s goods and bank accounts with money taken away by some of the individuals in a bizarre manner.
The company was incorporated in Ghana in 1997. They had acquired properties, including building, lands and trucks among others, which were also hijacked and sold off under strange circumstance.
The Indian investors, who have offices and other business interests in Dubai, London and other countries, have through their lawyers; Dadzie, Asiedu & Associates, since 2017, filed several legal processes and mounted political pressure towards having their monies paid them.

The Herald is also informed about near-death encounters between some officials of the company and their Ghanaian counterparts.
Other reports have also claimed that there were attempts not to allow other officers of Eland International Ghana Limited and Eland Thailand Company Limited, come to Ghana to fight for their money.
Other aspects of the same case are in Arbitration in London. The case paints a bad image of the country by revealing how foreign investors are treated and the funds mismanaged when they finally arrive in Ghana.
According to one of the documents, “in 2017, the lawyers of NIB, invited us through our lawyers trying to settle the matter in an amicable manner out of court and we suspended the arbitration proceedings and have been trying to come to some amicable solution, but again NIB has gone into a silent mode”.
“Therefore, under extreme pressure from our lenders, financiers, banks and partners, the investors of Eland, have restarted the process of arbitration and are in the process of presenting the PNs of 207.5 Million, plus claim the amounts paid to NIB by our lenders with interest”.

According to the investors “though we have no proof but during the trial of Dominion Capital Trust Vs NIB, we can see that NIB has been engaging in the game of “ROBBING PETER TO PAY PAUL” and by fraudulent raising of funds from the markets to hide its losses/defalcate huge amounts. From market sources and the trial one can see that NIB repaid its own PNs of 24 Million $ raised in 2005 and yet a sum of 45.8M-(16+2.5+24 M) =3.3 Million has again been defalcated by the then MD/Management of NIB”.
The company insisted that “since we were still not paid fully, we threatened legal action in 2008, but were told that NIB cannot raise more funds till they pay of the PNs of 60 Million in 2009. Since we could not wait for that long, NIB issued/guaranteed us 40 PNs of 5 Million $ each totaling 200 Million $ payable in May 2013 inclusive of advance interest up to 2013. These PNs have not been presented by us till date”.
But “upon pressure from our lenders and suppliers and non-payment to the fund managers, Eland sued NIB for 107$ in a fast Track High court in Accra in 2014 inclusive of interest up to only April 2011 and ONLY FOR CIF VALUE OF THE GOODS SUPPLIED TO NIB UNDER THE CMA under suit no OCC/28/2014. Eland Ghana, the local distributor of the goods did not claim its 62% of the duties, taxes and expenses in the said suit which together would exceed 200 Million $ in this case till NIB moved repeated failed applications to enjoin EIGL as a co-defendant. NIB finally succeeded in getting EIGL joined in the said suit as a third party”.
“Thereupon EIGL moved and application in the court to claim its 62% expenses plus 30% assured returns and succeeded in getting the matter being referred to Arbitration in London in 2016”, adding “notices for arbitration starting in London were issued but NIB, has consistently maintained either silence or given contradictory replies and theories in reply to various legal notices from London lawyers of ours.
In a recent post by former president of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, States that, Ghana will be the second country to manufacture mobile phone and other Technology handset in Africa.

Rwanda has become the first in Africa to produce smartphones.
The Mara Phone factory in Kigali commissioned last week on Tuesday by President Paul Kagame is expected to produce at least 1,200 smartphones daily for sale in Rwanda and abroad.

Ashish Thakkar, founder of Mara Group and member of President Paul Kagame’s Presidential Advisory Council, said the firm is in talks with regional countries including Kenya, DR Congo and Angola to export and sell the Rwanda-made smartphones.
He had earlier announced that the company planned to expand elsewhere on the continent and open a factory in South Africa.
Since the factory’s official launch, the sale of handsets has increased with at least 30 handsets sold per day between Tuesday and the time of going to press. In the past three months, the shop has sold about 130 phones.
Established at a cost of over $50 million by the Bank of Kigali, the factory directly employs 200 workers—90 per cent of whom are Rwandan and 60 per cent female—to work in technology development, production and the assembly lines. The local and foreign engineers, currently work one shift a day.
“Producing smartphones takes about 1,000 individual components in a complex manufacturing operation requiring significant technical skill and expertise,” said Mr Thakkar.

‘’I want to emphasise that this is a manufacturing facility and not an assembling plant,’’ he added.
Since The EastAfrican was not granted access to the factory floor, we are unable to ascertain his claims.
However, according to a source, the phones made at the plant are partially manufactured and partially assembled in Rwanda.
Most of the components are imported from China and Turkey, the source said, while the Mara factory in Kigali only manufacturers the motherboards, which drive the phone operating system.
“They make the motherboards in Rwanda using about 1,000 raw materials while the rest of the handset is assembled using imported parts,” the source told The EastAfrican.
The factory is divided into different sections for technology development, production and assembly lines.
The factory, so far, makes two phone models the Mara X and Mara Z retailing for $130 and $190 respectively. They are likened to the Nile X phones —an African brand phone made in Egypt with the help of China since 2017.
The Mara Z is a dual sim phone with a storage capacity of 32GB and memory of 3GB, while the Mara X is also a dual sim with 16GB space and 1GB memory. Both models are pre-installed with Google’s Android operating system.

More retail centres
The Mara phones have been on sale since early this year at the Kigali Business Centre, and the factory management says it is set to open 10 more retail centres in Kigali and across the country.
The Mara Z model is currently the preferred model and can be purchased in instalments over two years, a move aimed at making them affordable and give them a competitive edge over foreign models.
The retailer says they are able to supply orders of more than 100 phones at a go.
“A smartphone is no longer a luxury but a necessary component of daily life. Mara Phones shares the vision for our development and the introduction of its phones will put smartphone ownership within reach of more Rwandans,” President Kagame said during the factory launch.

“I bought the Mara Z because of its large storage capacity and because it is made in Rwanda. I own a Tecno but the Mara looks better designed and offers a warranty of 13 months,” said Aisha Uwitonze, a businesswoman, in response to our queries on user experience of the phones.
“A phone with a 1GB memory will likely begin to hang after downloading a few applications or after using it for some time. For that price, I could still buy a Tecno,” said Fred Hategekimana who opted not to buy the Mara X.
Tecno and Infinix phones retail within the same price range as the Mara phones.
Mobile phone subscriptions in Rwanda hit about 10 million last year according to the Rwanda Utilities and Regulations Authority.
Internet subscriptions also increased from 4.4 million users to 5.4 million, an increase of about 25 per cent, and the regulator attributed the increase to the affordability of smartphones as well as flexible pricing of Internet bundles.
The Mara phones manufactured in Kigali qualify for a corporate income tax holiday of up to seven years, which the government offers under its investment promotion code to investments worth at least $50 million in the manufacturing sector.
